Up to 24 million slices of bread are wasted every day in UK, contributing to £800 worth of food being thrown away by the average household in UK every year. North London Waste Authority commissioned Keep Britain Tidy to deliver free events across north London to help residents avoid bread waste and save money. You can see how local residents took part and the fantastic dishes they made in our Save A Crust video.
Seven free cookery workshops were held, one in each north London borough, with qualified professional chefs allowing residents to get more involved and try their hand at cooking bread-based dishes themselves. Tips and tools to help participants prevent food waste were provided throughout the events, which included demonstrations and practical cooking activities.
We have some bread-based recipes to share with you: panzanella, bruschetta, ribollita, veggie bread bake, roast vegetable fattoush salad with bread crusts, summer pudding and chocolate and banana French toast.
Here's a few more fabulous recipes from chef Mark Borrell of Skills Training Network who lead the Save a Crust workshops - Parmesan and thyme bread crust snacks, Bread crust pakoras, Cocoa chocolate bread pudding cake (pictured) and Leftover bread, cheese and onion patties.
