Penn learnt to sew at school and for a while worked from sewing patterns before discovering the creative pleasure of buying something second hand and customising it. She has been the ‘mending activist’ for Traid’s Camden charity shop and a volunteer with their regular textile repair workshops. Since then, she has expanded her involvement, working with Worn Well and running her own workshop at a large national arts, faith and activism festival. She loves participating in textile repair workshops - meeting people who believe in valuing their clothes and who want to stand up to our throw away culture.
Each event brings new challenges: different repair problems and knowing how best to guide people for their particular skill level. “Yes, I want to change the world but the big stuff can be done by other people, this is what I can do”.
