Chair of NLWA calls for an end to food labelling confusion to prevent food waste

Councillor Clyde Loakes, is calling on the food industry to find a solution to the food labelling confusion that leads to people throwing away tonnes of perfectly edible food. The announcement comes as supermarket Tesco promised to remove ‘best before’ dates from about 70 fruit and vegetable items to make things simpler for consumers.

22 million damaged furniture items and 11,000 bust bicycles thrown away each year

Series of Repair Cafés set to rescue ailing household items this autumn Across the UK, nearly 22 million small items of furniture, more than 11,000 bicycles and over 28 million toys are thrown away each year when they become damaged. Fewer than one in 10 people attempt to repair or restore broken items – despite 42% saying they’d like to learn the skills to do so, according to new research1 released today by North London Waste Authority (NLWA).

3 in 4 people confused about how best to reduce environmental impact of plastic

New research1 released today by North London Waste Authority (NLWA) has found that the ‘Blue Planet effect’ has resulted in 69% of people trying to change their habits to help the environment, although 3 out of 4 are confused about how to best reduce single use plastic. Only 1 in 4 people realise that prevention is better than cure when it comes to reducing the environmental impact of plastic.

Closure of In-Vessel Composting (IVC) Facility

North London sends over half a million tonnes of waste (582,797 tonnes in 2017-18) for disposal each year. Whilst every effort is made to encourage recycling across north London, not everyone recycles and not everything is recyclable so the ‘leftover’ waste needs disposing of properly and safely. The majority of the leftover or ‘residual’ waste is taken to the Edmonton EcoPark ‘Energy from Waste’ site where it is turned into energy to help power homes. The current centre at the EcoPark is nearly 50 years old and needs replacing to continue to process north London’s residual waste. North London Waste Authority (NLWA) has therefore obtained approval to build a new Energy Recovery Facility (ERF), and associated development, at the site.
